A Rabbi "Jewsplains" Christmas music
Jews wrote all the best Christmas songs, sounds antisemitic, but its true.
Merry Erev Christmas!
This week we are re-airing one of our favorite episodes, "All I want for Christmas is Jews", from December 2022. In this episode we interview Rabbi David Komerofsky, an expert on Christmas music. We even made a spotify playlist for you of the best Jewish Christmas songs. Feel free to add your own!
If Rabbi K's name sounds familiar, it's because his congregation in Canton, Ohio was just the target of a shooting plot by a 13-year-old. Such are the times.
But first - Chaya Leah is back from Israel so for 47 minutes we talk about the horrors she saw there, as well as the horrors she saw in her hometown of Long Beach, which just voted to call for a ceasefire in a country 7,000 miles away. We expect Hamas and the IDF to lay down their weapons any day now. Here is the speech Chaya Leah had prepared:
“ I just got off the phone with prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu and he is shaking in his boots. He called an emergency war cabinet meeting to discuss the Long Beach City council ceasefire resolution. While I was on the phone with bibi i got a call waiting beep and it was Zelensky from Ukraine. He’s very upset that the Long Beach City council hasn’t made a public resolution about what’s going on in Ukraine but have commented on Gaza. Also, I was several minutes late to the meeting tonight because I tripped over 18 homeless people while trying to get into the building.”
We made a highlight reel, best of LBC Antisemitism:
Don’t be sad. Here’s Joan Rivers on Christmas envy (3:12)
And Jerry Seinfeld spreading some joy:
I i heard "brr it's cold in here " and was like 'Bring it on!!!"
Now that She's All That is on Netflix, it made me realize that Gabrielle Union was in the best late 90s teen movies - Bring it On, 10 Things I Hate About You, and She's All That.
Clueless is the greatest. During the pandemic there was a WhatsApp group where you could request movies and they would send you links to the movies. I got Clueless. Hope I don't see you too sporadically is the greatest. Lone of all time. Anyway. It is basically literature
In regards to Jews who are like not in my name. Wallace Shawn is on the board of Jewish Voices. For Peace and went to the Menorah Lighting they did at Columbus Circle on the first night of Chanukah. Where Linda fucking Sarsour spoke. Because even though she is explicit that Palestine is Muslim, she is not anti Semitic at all.
I can separate art from politics though and he really was great in Clueless. Oh. But back in 2014 he did write an op es about that Golda Meir quote about peace with Palestinians if they would love their children more than they hate us.
And Shawn's.interpretstion was that Meir meant...I can't remember but something about Palestinians deserving to have their children killed until they stopped hating Israel. Which is an.... interesting interpretation.
Regards Christmas music one need remember that it one is referring to secular Christmas songs than that is very likely the case; if religious hymns, on the other hand; that wouldn't be the case.
