How many Carribean Jews do you know? Well, now you know Yirmiyahu!
Remember when diversity wasn’t an annoying word that makes you think of 5 hour office HR power point presentations? Our guest today is diverse in the cooolest way possible - not just his background, but his experience and work as well. Yirmiyahu Danzig tells us all about his upbringing as a Carribean/American/Israeli Jew, his military service in the heart of the conflict alongside Israeli soldiers of all religions, and his online work building bridges with our Arab neigbors.
You can find Yirmiyahu on his wonderful instagram @that_semite, and also on Jewish Unpacked, where he is a digital educator (beware the video rabbithole - it’s pretty powerful!)

Here’s some of what we covered:
Why does Yirmiyahu speak so many languages?? Hebrew, English, Arabic, Yiddish, Guyanese Creole, and a little bit of Palestinian Yiddish (what?)
The history of Carribean Jews, aka the Crypto Jews who hid their identity sometimes for several generations. Did you know that perhaps 30% of Latin Americans have Jewish roots? Book rec: Jewish Pirates of the Carribean
9th generation Israelis
Yirmiyahu’s origin story, or - do only gentiles fight back?
What do we do with all these Jews?
Traumas R’ us
Yirmiyahu’s service in the Border Patrol, working with Palestinians every day in the heart of the old city of Jerusalem, serving alongside muslim, Jewish, Druze, Christian, and Bedouin Israeli officers.
How to make peace? Step 1 - find someone to talk to who doesn’t suck.
Here is a great clip from his social media, where he regularly engages with people in Arabic:

Really enjoyed this guest!
Omg! ChayaLeah! I started noticing “the shift to 48” thing on the American Left but I didn't have the language for it! I was just like, they really do mean “from the river to the sea.” I’m still on 67!
This was such a great, wide-ranging conversation. Yirmiyahu makes me want to be a better person! What a thoughtful guy.
Loved this.
