This week we were very excited to welcome Hen Mazzig! Hen is an online personality of sorts who we’ve been following and enjoying for quite a long time. Hen identifies as a Queer, Mizrahi Zionist and he is also an author, co-founder of the Tel Aviv Institute, and so much more.
We talk to Hen about everything from his family's Jewish roots in North Africa and Iraq, American Jews and Israel, being a Mizrahi or Sephardi Jew, progressive politics, and more! We also discuss his book which you should definitely buy called "The Wrong Kind of Jew: A Mizrahi Manifesto" wherever you get books (or just here on Amazon).
Follow his work on Twitter @HenMazzig, Instagram and Facebook and on his website: www.HenMazzig.com
Did we lose the first few mintues with Hen due to technical issues? It’s hard to say really. What is loss? The Talmud says… anyway we filled in a little intro for you just us girls, and really if we didn’t have to, you wouldn’t know how we feel about Jamie Foxx and Department Store dressing rooms.

When you are one of 18 top Zionist women in America, you have to constantly keep up with media demands. This week our very own Chaya Leah was featured on a podcast called “Women and Justice” with Dr. Shauntey James, exposing a new audience to the lifestyle of a Haredi woman. You can listen to it here:

Have now read both "Spies of No Country" and "Israel: A Concise History." Both excellent. this gentile learned a lot. Thank you.
OMF. Weeerll. The Century 22 on 68th or so was an abomination because previously it had been the best Food Emporium. I refused to go. The downtown Century 22 was battle. I tried to return some bras there. Epic levels of interrogation from the staff. Also I have not heard so much Yiddish except at my grandmother's,.
As foe Hen. Really interesting. I have heard a lot of anti Zionist Jews talk about the mistreatment of Mizriahi Jews as further proof that Zionism is racism .
When my mom and her family arrived to Israel they were put in asbestos housing, along with educated Jews from Iraq, Egypt, and Morocco. Also Jews from Western Europe and the US. But uneducated Jews from Eastern Europe and the Middle East, they were put in tents. My mom's family were not in that position because my grandfather was an engineer.
And yeah. About the American Jewish view of what Jews look like. My mom grew up in Ramat Gan, so I heard Arabic accented Hebrew on the street when we visited, and Polish scented Hebrew at my grandmother's, i didn't know that Jews were supposed to only be Ashkenazi. I only learned that when I started schoolm
Also. My mom's best friend from the army, her grandparents were all from Russia but they all emigrated to Egypt. So her parents' native languages were Yiddish and Arabic. My mom's best friend grew up speaking French, Yiddish, Hebrew and Arabic.
