This was a wonderful conversation! Yael is 100% right about how extraordinarily comfortable we Americans are.
And yes, I think we in the West have a very hard time believing that anyone is capable of the barbarity exhibited by Hamas. I certainly did. Until Oct 7, what I saw was two sides making impossibly cruel claims about each other. On Oct 7, I realized that, in fact, one side really was capable of what they were accused of. A lot fell into place because of that.
This was a great episode, very cathartic conversation. I was, at several points, unironically fist-pumping the air because of how refreshing it was to hear other people saying the things that I’ve been thinking. I have become so disillusioned with my generation. At this point, the non-Jews that I most trust people several decades older than me. They were the ones who actually made the effort to check up on me after the October 7 attack and who actually get that Hamas are terrible people doing terrible things.
What has become especially apparent is that a lot of young people just don’t grasp the realities of war. I think I must’ve overestimated my generation’s understanding of what war is. People die in every war. Usually in pretty large numbers. Non-combatants and combatants (whose deaths are also extremely sad, especially in cases where literally every person of a certain age is drafted) alike. That’s why it’s generally reckless to invade other countries during peacetime and go on hideous murderous rampages and why countries run by reasonably sane people tend to avoid doing that. I feel bad for non-Hamasniks who get caught up in the violence, but I feel like the other side are not doing enough to condemn the people and ideology that actually launched the war in the first place and who are continuing to perpetuate the war by not surrendering and releasing all hostages. And perhaps a lot more young people need history books and dictionaries, because war and genocide are quite different concepts.
Keep up the great work. I love you two and Moynihan.
