Hello from not-so-sunny California!
This week we welcomed
, author of Troubled: A Memoir of Foster Care, Family, and Social Class.Born to a drug-addicted, homeless mother in California, Rob was passed around 7 foster homes and grew to become a rowdy teenager. He turned his life around when he joined the Air Force after high school, and ultimately was accepted into Yale for his BA and earned his PhD in Psychology from the University of Cambridge.
We cover a lot in this episode, like class in America, luxury beliefs of the elite, how to build resilience, Rob's first ever encounter with a Jewish person as well as his first ever encounter with ice cream (both left a lasting impression). We also don’t shy away from some hard-hitting questions, like:
Do you know about the holocaust?
And: Do you condemn Hamas?
You must buy Rob’s book and read it, also give it to any whiny people you know.
You can follow him right here on Substack and also on Twitter.
Thank you to all the Los Angeles AAJ listeners who came out Saturday night for our little meet and greet. You guys were totally normal and we had a blast! Where should we go next?
0.6%? That counts. Adding him to my list of Jews.
I loved the episode with Rob but I'm sad about his crappy childhood. Unfortunately, the mood bump that I got from the episode was short lived as my Jewish stress returned with a vengeance. I stress ate an entire pack of thick cut bacon and a Chicago style pizza (and I'm a New Yorker and I hate Chicago style pizza) - need I saw more?! Please interview more lovers of Jews ASAP!
