Untangling Israeli politics with Lahav Harkov
Ever look at the Knesset and tell yourself - wow, we're lucky the US congress is so normal?
This week we call on Lahav Harkov of the Jerusalem Post, to help us untangle the swamp of israeli politics (mixed metaphors by design). If you want to skip the chithcat and get straight to business, the political analysis starts around 13:30.
Follow Lahav on Twitter: @LahavHarkov and right here on Substack lahav.substack.com/. And if you have questions for us, you can send them to askajewpod@gmail.com
Here’s how it went down:
Hyperbole vs. reality: Is this Israel’s most right wing government?
Also, what is Israel’s right wing?
Those Orthodox again…sigh.
Israelis have just discovered wokeness.
26:00 The proposed judicial reform in Israel - The end of democracy or the best democracy ever?
32:00 We ask Lahav - How bad is it?

How many goats do you need to nominate a supreme court justice?
Lefties gonna leftie.
“Palestinian Israelis” are the Latinx of the Middle East.
The left <3 Bibi.
Sorry, but it’s still pretty Gay up in here.
A compliment for Israeli politicians (really!)
The day after Mahmoud Abbas - we’ll be sad to see this holocaust denying terrorist supporter go.
Ending on a high note - with an eye towards peace with Saudi Arabia. Here’s a photo of Saudi Arabia Yael took while flying from Africa to Israel late last year. The opening of the airspace to Israeli aircrafts is a pretty new development and quite moving.
I paused the podcast after the intro to come make this comment.
Raised in an American home with a mother working full time in a job that had her getting home around 6 or 7, and not having a child until my late 30s, I had a steep learning curve when I became a mother. Learning to cook and keep house and stay emotionally regulated with kids’ needs took me 5 years.
I have great admiration for women who can get through the cooking and cleaning and then have all this time to stimulate their brains. I went from always just doing whatever I wanted to having to do all this domestic work that I have never had to, nor learned to do. It took all my brain power to learn TO DO all the domestic labor that our society doesn’t value. I felt like I had to do it and had to do it well and I felt that it should be so simple and easy. Building the process memory up for doing the tasks took a long time. As well as building up the core belief that doing such labor was as valuable to my family’s well being as personal hygiene and all the other self care tasks that I had practiced enough for them to be on auto pilot.
Not gonna lie, I envy moms that have domestic labor skills on autopilot.
Tough weekend for Israel and friends 💔 I listened to this episode twice. So glad I did. So much in it.
I’m bracing myself for this new government, both for my own internal conflict and for what the Israel/Jew-hating people of the world are going to unleash on us. I made a vow to myself that I would limit my twitter outrage intake this year. I’m hermetically sealing myself off from anything but Israeli + Jewish news sources. Speaking of, the podcast Unholy: Two Jews on the News is really good.
I love Chaya Leah’s mom’s parenting advice! That makes so much sense and re: previous episode, I’m with Yael on royals and tsars! I have an innate revulsion towards monarchs. Generational trauma!
shavua tov!
