Hi! Recommended podcasts: The Glenn Show (especially when John McWhorter joins Glenn), Limited Liability, Honestly with Bari Weiss, Sapir Conversations, The Unspeakable with Meghan Daum (which is how I discovered your podcast), A special Place in Hell, and People of the Pod.
I want to provide a different perspective on the discussion of 'Jew Face". There is a good quantity (and quality!) of Jewish writers, directors and producers working in television and the movies. They contribute a not insignificant amount of programming with Jewish themes and characters. However, there does not appear to be a particular overrepresentation of Jewish actors and actresses. Thus, it is almost by necessity that non-Jewish performers are playing Jewish roles. Is Jonah Hill or Adam Sandler going to really portray Leonard Bernstein? And, candidly I would rather see the wonderful, non-Jewish Kathryn Hahn in The Shrink Next Door any day before watching the awful caricature performed by the Jewish Maggie Wheeler in Friends.
Furthermore, there have been amazing Jewish actors and actresses portraying non-Jewish characters as of late. The fantastic Julia Garner (mom is Israeli!) won three Emmy's for Ozark. Julia Louis-Dreyfus won six Emmy's for Veep. Should Julia Garner be prohibited from performing in Ozark as she does not originate in Missouri? I think the answer to this question is quite obvious.
The only Jew Face offence I've ever taken was Patrick Dempsey playing Meyer Lansky and Richard Grieco playing Bugsy Siegel in Mobsters https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mobsters_(film)
Veep was terrific. But, it became sort of a mess once the creator Armando Iannucci departed.
If you like Veep watch the Iannaucci show it is (somewhat) based on - The Thick of It. Peter Capaldi was absolutely brilliant.
There was also a British-American film (which interestingly had cast members from both Veep and The Thick of It) called: In the Loop (which also starred James Gandolfini). This was great too.
I have not seen Avenue Five. I do not have HBO presently (currently, Prime and Netflix), but when I subscribe again I will check it out. I thought Death of Stalin was good, but not as funny as his other work.
In the Loop also starred Peter Capaldi who was fantastic. I cannot understand how he was not nominated for an Oscar...
Personally I cannot wait for Lana del Rey’s new album... also Miley Cyrus.... but mostly Lana del Rey’s.... she’s the Sylvia of millennial women and so underrated ! So that’s the main thing on my mind as of late lol. Been enjoying the witch trials of jkr as well and Louise Perry’s podcast.
Ps. I messaged your Instagram this but I’m wondering if you will ever do any zoom hang outs ? It’s been so hard for me to find a community of Jews to fit into recent years 😭 my usual cohort is way too woke now. And then I don’t really fit into orthodox spaces (I’ve spent time in some and they don’t bother me, but I am a bit out of place within them I think). Also you should both visit me in Montreal 🙆🏻♀️ I’ll take you to Snowden’s deli and cheskies for smoked meat and babka !
Since this particular episode is about reading, plus I am re-listening to your convo with Michael Moynihan and his love for history, I wondered if you had seen this book, Under Jerusalem: The Buried History of the World's Most Contested City by Andrew Lawler? Also, perhaps you could have him on.
Heretic in the House, is fascinating. I do not come from the Hardi world, grew up Modern Orthodox, so leaving had issues, but none like what Naomi describes. Also, I really enjoyed the interview with her - where she talks about the interwar years and how what we see today in the Hardi world isn't old, but something very new. Thanks for recommending this.
Wow, you’ve come a long way from the romance novels you used to read as a teenager !
Shhhhhhhhh
CL to star in a followup to 80 for Brady called Shul for Sewell

I agree about representation... I don’t care if non Jews play Jews. When they make a movie about my life I want Helen Mirren to play me.
And I want Bradley Cooper to play me. : )
Chaya Leah - You are really awesome on the podcast! I really enjoy your perspective on a wide range of American, Israeli and religious topics.
Sapir is sooooo good!!! The writing and the podcast https://sapirjournal.org/

Veep is without a doubt one of the greatest comedies in history. Just amazing.

Loved Thick of It. Have you seen Avenue Five (HBO) or Death of Stalin (film). I'll have to look up In the Loop, thanks!

I can watch it over and over again (and i do)
30 Rock and VEEP are the shows I still reference constantly. Gen Z kids look blankly at me.
Because Gen Z kids wouldn’t know a joke if it took a dump on their chests.
It's violence y'all

just bought the Second Temple book! That looks so good. I've been reading Simon Schama's Story of the Jews Vol 1, so good timing https://www.amazon.com/Story-Jews-One-Finding-BC-1492/dp/0060539208
And, one of my favorite Jewish sites, My Jewish Learning, has an email series about the Writings (Ketuvim) https://www.myjewishlearning.com/journey-through-ketuvim/
I really liked Heretic in the House. Second that rec. Here are some of my favorite Jewish pods. We are legion!
Tablet, Unorthodox https://www.tabletmag.com/podcasts/unorthodox
Shalom Hartman Inst., Identity / Crisis https://www.hartman.org.il/program/identity-crisis-podcast/
Unholy: Two Jews on the News https://open.spotify.com/show/2m2UnLfiAyOehtF1bsv98W
I can't believe I've never watched VEEP!
Chaya Leah - all these books you’re reading, they’re in Yiddish, right?
I read them in 3 languages at a time...like the Rosetta Stone

Alllll of this sounds good!
Except for 80 for Brady. I just can't with Fonda and her bewbs. I tried to watch This is Where I leave You and her acting made me ragey!
Definitely I'll be watching that YouTube author!
MILF Manor sounds like it might be worse. just saying.
Ha ha ha ha! I own MM but I'm cringing so hard at it!
