Best friend of the Jews and righteous among the podcasters - Michael Moynihan of the Fifth Column podcast is our special guest this week! We feel especially blessed by his goyish presence (in person!) since The Fifth Column sort of gave birth to Ask A Jew, though no one really takes responsibility (think 3
I peeked a bit at Ancient Apocalypse (as a long lapsed archaeologist). The vibe I got from it was every generation needs its version of Chariot of the Gods. So, this is not necessarily about "ancient aliens" but it does claim secret knowledge and a cover up conspiracy, and it appeals to our desire to have these kinds of explanations, but ignores the fact that conspiracies of this type are basically impossible. It's nice they made a show for the guy, but I call BS.
Chaya Leah, our parents should hang out. I was told from as young as I can remember that everyone hates Jews. The assimilated German Jews were a warning in my house. The other week a non-Jewish friend of mine was like, “did you know Germany was very progressive before the Nazis took over?!?” 😑
Audience question: are the Jews overrepresented on Moynihan’s bookshelf?
And side note: Please don’t tell me you two went to the Dara Horn event and I could’ve bumped into you 🫣 however, if you did go, I hope it was awesome. I’m 30 pages from finishing People Love Dead Jews. I looked up the Harbin Ice Festival and one year (if not more) they had a replica of a Jewish cemetery! 😱 https://www.icefestivalharbin.com/attraction-p8-harbin-ice-lantern-show.html
Can we have a Jewsplainer about Hanukkah? I tell people the Maccabees are the Jewish Taliban. Is this worse than Yael’s understanding of the holiday?
I collect Yiddish from my in laws but macher was new so great excitement here. My mother-in-law went into great vagueness about "taki". "He's a Dr taki" but I'm still not sure it's actually Yiddish or she's making it up to mess with the shiksa
Ha! “Takeh” is “really” if that tracks. And if it makes you feel better me and my sister would play “Yiddish or nonsense?” whenever my mom would say some word we didn’t know.
I’m excited to listen to this one! I’m just starting it, but given it’s 1 hour and 40 min, can we officially credit The Faith Column eps routinely hitting 2 hours to Michael Moynihan?
Great interview ! -- I feel like I really need to join the 5th column community and make friends but also idk if I can add another podcast to keep up with 😭
Hey friends! Do any of you have cookbook recommendations for cookbooks for rugelach, cookies, latkes, borscht? I do have Alison Roman's cookbooks, which have things like brisket, but I'd like a more specifically Jewish recipe collection. Thanks for your help!
Yaaaay!
Didn’t want to be first but 🥳🥳🥳
Great discussion!

For a more comprehensive and kinder critique of the series by someone who watched it l and has interacted with the main protagonist behind the series, see Skeptic (on Substack): for a written (https://open.substack.com/pub/michaelshermer/p/alternative-civilization-and-its?r=5j4nd&utm_medium=ios&utm_campaign=post) or audio (https://open.substack.com/pub/michaelshermer/p/the-non-magisterium-of-religion-audio?utm_source=direct&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web) review and discussion, which I found very insightful and worthwhile.

That makes way more sense!

We didn't have a Kmele to tell us we better start wrapping things up...
"We've been going a while now..."

Had to look up that time Moynihan interviewed Gilbert. A great supplemental treat to this amazing episode! Well done

Yes!!! Here’s a link to the best kosher cookbook. It’s not fancy with pictures, but these are the best recipes.
