What I found ridiculous is that this young man wanted to quit his paying job and go all in on a podcast and at that moment, propose marriage and family building. And that the young woman, with unsteady costume designing jobs, said yes and then they got a hella cute house. So dumb.

Thank you for this episode! My husband (Chinese) and I ( Jewish: grew up in LA) watched this. I couldn’t really articulate my discomfort until I heard you guys. Larry David (Curb Your Enthusiasm) also makes me cringe sometimes, but it is truly funny (as is Seinfeld). There were for sure funny moments, but this could have been so much better and braver.

Better and braver, exactly!

I agree with Yael, when caricatures are funny, all my offense drops away. (I'm from the Midwest and Fargo makes me laugh).

Chaya Leah, great point about Julia’s character’s flaw being that she wanted to show she was accepting while Eddy Murphy’s character was NOI. I did really like when they came together in the end though. Im glad I watched this because the online Jews have A LOT of thoughts.

I know- everyone feels the need to unpack this movie... including us!! I’d love to talk to Jonah hill about it.

He owes it to Jewish mothers everywhere to come on the pod!

didn't watch You People, but I did watch some American Indian movie Wedding Season. What I really enjoyed is all the awful tropes - but it was about Indians, not JEWS!!! There was a mention of a Hindi girl marrying a Jewish man - no problem but the big criticism was about the Hindi marrying the Muslim.

I wanted to like the Jonah Hill movie; it struck me as ham-fisted satire and not so hilarious. (Sorry, maybe “ham-fisted” wasn’t the best choice of words.)
