There was a Shabbat service at Burning Man! https://forward.com/fast-forward/559550/burning-man-shabbat-in-mud

I remember really liking my bat mitzvah service but not having a lot of fun at the party. I had it at this hall on Long Island, The Fox Hollow. My parents wouldn’t let me have a DJ so I had a band. I was right on the cusp of DJ normalization.

My favorite random tv show is Lucifer. It’s this campy vampire detective show (trust me). I heard evangelicals liked it because it took heaven and hell seriously https://www.netflix.com/title/80057918

And, was it just me or was the Rabbi in You’re So Not Invited ... always saying Shabbat Shalom even though it wasn’t Friday? Like she thought that’s how you say hello?

I got my first and only case of poison ivy at a friend’s bat mitzvah party, summer of ‘97. Spent the next day in an oatmeal bath in the tub. Feel like this was a spiritual predecessor to this year’s Burning Man, somehow.

The highlight of the episode for me was this bit from the discussion of Burning Man:

Yael: They have to share all their food.

ChayaLeah: Ew.

I’m with you. Sharing is gross!

This weekend we went to a wedding near Riverside , I’m sure Chaya Leah knows the Rabbis, the senior one is her age.... the couple isn’t Chanda, but boy was the wedding moving. I could tell how much Rabbi Fuss loves this couple. He and his wife Tzippi, (yes I pronounced her name correctly) have 7 children, from Mendy at 18 down to a 4 month old baby. Mendy is OTD, not Chabad anymore, and yet the parents are so proud, he made Aliyah, he is joining an elite army unit. Too often is someone leaves the community the outside world thinks they are shunned. Not so, he is loved. He was at the wedding, what a lovely young man, what a wonderful family. The two younger wives had incredible wigs, just saying... these are the wives of two other Rabbis, they aren’t Mormon, youngest Rabbi (again, Mendy) is focused only on UC Riverside

I also wish people knew that former orthodox family members aren’t shunned! I used to think that but then I read/heard it doesn’t happen that often. That’s a sad misunderstanding.

I don’t think I’m totally alone in my passion for non-American detective shows from across the Anglosphere. But my random shows that nobody else watches are a pair of Hugh Bonneville-led mockumentary comedies made during the Cameron premiership, about a planning committee for the London Olympics (2012), and the bureaucracy of the BBC (W1A), both produced by the BBC; available for Americans on Britbox (via Amazon). Recommend, at least if you’re also the kind of person who thinks the British are hilarious.

I know some other people (Moynihan) have watched “The Thick of It” but it never hurts to remember the pre-Veep, British Veep, which is more inappropriate and has more aggressive profanity (primarily due to irascible Scotsmen ).

I also had a crush on Kyle Chandler before the Friday Night Lights days. I watched every episode of Early Edition and watched an even earlier series (maybe before your time Yael) called Homefront. That is when the crush began. Maybe it is streaming somewhere?

So much to say. First it was not until I met my Iraqi ex that I learned that bashert is a Yiddish word, not Hebrew. Which I learned wasn't

Hebrew because he had never heard the word before

The only Pride and Prejudice is the Coin Firth one. Still the Keira Knightley version was on Netflix and it is better than I remembered

For me tooo the BBC production (yeah, the one with Colin Firth) is by far the best. I’ve watched and rewatched it. The movie version with Keira Knoghtly was good, but I admit to not liking it near as much.

I will add. Ok. Yael I feel vaguely stalkery for saying this but I think you are on the UWS, based on what you have said. If you are and have the time, there is the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising Memorial on like 82nd,on the promenade in Riverside Park. Every year they have a memorial service. It is very beautiful but sad now as now no survivor speaks

And in terms of keeping things relevant,I know the Dallas Holocaust Museum talked about the murders of indigenous people on South America in order to make it relevant to lods. Which I guess but I am also like....but the culture still exists and American kids can go back and visit their families. We do not have e that. It is gone

And as for the Instagram campaign, if it is the one I am thinking of. The one in which they posted this girls story also on billboards in Israel. It was from a diary of a girl in Hungary. They have excepts on the Uad Vashem website, which is how I recognized it. She wrote about having to go e her bike up.

I totally watched that show with Kyle Chandler. It was that says news though. Because remember with the newspaper you are reading the previous days news. So he was getting the new for later that day. My brother got me into it.

I loved Freaks and Geeks which no one watched. And then I fell in love with Grosse Point after it went off the air - not to be confused with Grosse Point Blank.it had the chick who played Big Red in Bring it On and also it has the woman who played the lawyer that tries to get Sandy Cohen to cheat on Kirsten Cohen with her.

Btw. Candy is so addictive not just because it is so sweet but all the fat too.

Also in regards to the Holocaust there are the Greek and Bulgarian Jews. And I think Albanian Jews might not be Ashkenazi. But apparently quite a few Tunisian Jews were killed too.

The Mortified podcast is amazing. I hadn't known it was a live show. The Moth is good too.

I ate up the first season of Treinta Monedas, a campy mystery-horror series from Spain. It takes place in a tiny town, where the super-model level gorgeous vet and mayor end up battling the Forces of Evil. (I think the actor playing the mayor must have it in his contract that he appears shirtless in every episode). I haven't found another human being who has seen it in the US, but it must have been popular elsewhere, as season 2 is coming out and Paul Giamatti is in it. It's on HBO Max--join me!

The scariest movie i've seen was a Spanish one. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UkuKtS-N1rM

I saw it at the arclight in LA (giant theatre) and you could hear a pin drop.

“the jews won’t replace us” actually refers to the conspiracy belief that the jews are behind massive immigration of *people of colour* to become the majority in the USA, this being the “replacing” Whites - even theses GDL idiots can do enough maths to know that there simply aren’t enough jews in the world to replace them

Slogan suggestion for the poor spellers: “Israel Is-real!”

I suppose this is more of a pro-Semitic slogan, though.

Hell on Wheels watcher here! Really good show...I still can’t get the tattooed chin girl out of my head and really sad they didn’t come back for another season! No judgment Yael, also a Below Deck watcher...it’s my nighttime “need to turn off my brain” show. Really bummed captain Jason let go of the boy from Brooklyn and hey there is a fellow Jew this season with the Chef!
