My grandpa’s family came to the US from Minsk (he was the only sibling born here). It may have still been part of Russia at the time, or his family just never got with the Belarus program. Old country = “Russia” in our fam for sure.
Yes! My mom’s side is from Minsk and we were always just Russian. I figured it was a borders thing. Ditto with the Ukrainian side. In Dara Horn’s book People Love Dead Jews she talks about Jews saying their names were changed involuntarily at Ellis Island but they really changed them themselves and were ashamed by the truth. I wonder if there’s a backstory here -- or if it really was just a borders thing. Maybe we just kept getting shuffled around.
I always assumed it was because it was easier to say Russian when speaking to Americans. My family is from Ukraine, but between them spoke Hungarian, Russian, Ukrainian+Rusyn, Yiddish, a little Polish a little Romanian...Every geographical pocket has too much flavor and history to sum up, not to mention it might have been a different country or three over one of my grandparent's lifetimes. It's too much to explain! Officially, they were Russian, unofficially...it's complicated.
