It’s Thursday evening and I should be starting to cook for Shabbat. I’m having about 40 people for dinner, but instead, I’ve been scrolling through the web reading article after article about the new movie on Netflix called You People.
I had the opportunity to watch this instant classic (insert eye-rolling emoji here) this past week so that Yael and I could discuss it on our latest pod. We discussed it but I am not fulfilled. I need to hear more opinions from more people.
For those of you who have no idea what I’m talking about stop reading this and go watch the movie now! I don’t care if you are not enjoying the movie you must finish it. You can’t have an intelligent conversation about it unless you see the whole thing.
Here’s an idea: should I ask Ilhan Omar to watch it and respond since she has some extra time on her hands now?
I want to hear from you in the comments. Did you like the movie? Did you like the cast? What did you think of the plot? On a scale of FDR to Hitler how antisemitic was the movie?
Let’s start a conversation about this!!
Here is the official trailer for the movie for those of you who haven’t seen it.
I laughed. I cringed. I rolled my eyes. Sometimes all in the same minute.
You people are going to make me watch this, aren’t you? I’ll be back with thoughts!
Oh! P.S. loved the last episode and I really hate to say it but to my American ears, David’s citizenship experience felt like racial discrimination. It brought up thoughts about an idealized vision of yourself and sometimes what the reality is and collective shame. I had already been thinking about this because of Tyre Nichols and how the five black cops were a shonda for the black community. I felt deeply for the black community having to experience that.
P.P.S. Yael, do Israelis celebrate Valentine’s Day? Feels like it would be weird to venerate a Saint in Israel but can we ever resist the temptation of a holiday centered around chocolate?
