When I was eleven or twelve a friend of mine and I paid a visit to the little video store in the shopping center that was walking distance from our houses. We snuck into the small adults only section and had a look around. The only thing I remember seeing is a woman with breasts roughly the size of basketballs. After a minute the proprietor got suspicious and came and yelled at us and told us to leave. I’m pretty sure this is why I’m gay.

About wearing the wrong thing and standing out, I had an experience that was the mirror image of ChayaLeah’s Diwali debacle. When I was living in Jerusalem, my friend suggested one Friday evening that we go to shul in Mea Shearim. The davening was very nice and the people were fine, but I made the mistake of wearing a dark blue shirt with khaki pants, and it was a little awkward. The children were staring at me like I was from another planet.

I just want to show my appreciation to Chaya Leah for hitting all the important landmarks for the Gen X Jewish girl Brooklyn youth. Last week it was the Loehmann's fitting room and this week it's Shang Chai.

Loehman's? Sigh. And Filene's. Remember Daffy'',s?

I love a good continental breakfast when I stay at hotels. But I'd be happy with just one of those waffle makers!

Shots of Michael Stuhlbarg who played Richard Sackler in Dopesick made me uneasy. Lots of long scenes looking at his nose. I thought I might have been making this up but a non-Jewish friend said he agreed. But he might just be humoring me at this point. The thing (for me) about Bradley Cooper is that the fake nose was unnecessary. His real nose looked closer to Leonard Bernstein's. I'm sorry that Bradley is in denial. He should visit a Holocaust museum and think about what he's done.

And I am sooo with Chayaleah about hot drug addicts. My biggest childhood crushes were Robert Downey Jr in Less Than Zero and Judd Nelson in The Breakfast Club.

A question came to mind this weekend while I was reading the Torah portion. Are observant/Orthodox Jews allowed to visit Egypt? There sure is a whole lot of "DO NOT GO BACK THERE" in our scripture.

Why not? There were Jews in Egypt for years. Many of them frum

All over the Torah it’s like, “DO NOT go back to Egypt!” I was wondering if there’s some kind of Talmudic debate on whether Jews are allowed to go for vacation (or, likelier for that time, trade). I could totally see some chasidic sect having a law/rule.

Haven’t even finished listening to the latest podcast, but I want your movie, with or without Natalie Portman and/or prosthetics. I will pay to stream. Let me know when it’s in turnaround 😃

This episode was hilarious. "Catching anorexia" had me in stitches, and I loved the nude socks conversation. My BFF both listened and were reminiscing about socks. I had all sorts of fancy, colorful, sheer knee socks, but I can't for the life of me remember what I wore them with. Regarding changing seats on the plane, I don't know what the circumstances are around this incident - sounds like someone was pretty rude - but I would happily give my my seat if someone offers me an aisle up front. I recommend the orthodox fly Southwest if possible. You get a boarding position assigned and choose your seat. It's easier to ask someone to move if you can juggle things around a bit. Chaya Leah, question. I have an orthodox cousin. He and his wife came to see me in Colorado years ago and I instinctively gave him a hug. I quickly realized the error of my ways. Then I introduced him to a friend who happens to have our last name but is not family and SHE hugged him. (Suffin. I found her when AOL was a thing and someone accidentally messaged me at JSuffin. I'm Jean, she's Jill.) Years later, I'm still wondering how he may have reacted to that. What do men have to do in order to "cleanse" themselves after accidentally touching a woman who is not their wife? And lastly, Does Yael owe Chaya Leah an apology? Re: discussing light rail someone brought up the issue of whether it should run on Shabbat. Chaya Leah didn't have a strong opinion either way, but Yael responded that if THAT is the main concern you (the royal You) have, you're an idiot. If you two can't be nice and respect each other, we are all doomed.

Love your comment and thanks for sticking up for me!! Yael always owes me an apology!! There is no cleaning ritual for touching a woman . If a man is uncomfortable he’ll make sure to not be in that situation. I’m sure your cousin didn’t mind.

I haven't finished the episode yet, but, for what it's worth, the Bernsteins definitely did host the Black Panthers at their home in 1970. Several pieces about the event appeared in the New York Times in January of that year, as well as Tom Wolfe's now legendary essay "Radical Chic: That Party at Lenny's" published in June.
